SPRING MILLS — For the second straight night, Jefferson’s softball team hit the double-digit mark in runs, as the Cougars topped Spring Mills 12-4 in five innings on Wednesday night.
Jefferson (4-0) scored in all but one inning, including nine runs over the first three innings. In the first, the Cougars jumped ahead 2-0 with two outs after a single by Ainsley Phillips scored Becca Munslow and Brooke Allen, who singled and walked, respectively.
Spring Mills answered right back in the bottom half of the first with a pair of runs to tie the game at 2-all. Those runs came when Claire Wetzel singled home Taryn Close, and Jasmin Vermillion scored on an ensuing error.
The Cougars’ bats got hot over the next two innings, scoring three runs in the second inning and four more in the third inning.
In the second, after Caroline Abe singled, and Alissa Darr reached on an error, Chloe Cowan doubled to scored Abe. After Darr scored on a passed ball, Cowan went to third and then scored on a Spring Mills error to make it 5-2.
The Cougars were back at it in the third inning, notching four more runs. Graclyn Dodson walked, and Phillips was hit by a pitch to put two runners on with no outs. Savannah Smith followed with a three-run homer to left field, putting Jefferson ahead 8-2. Jefferson notched its fourth run of the inning after Cowan, who reached on a fielder’s choice, later scored on a triple from Jersey Rummel to right field, making it 9-2.
Spring Mills battled back to make it 9-4 with two runs in the bottom half of the third inning. Alexis Wagner scored on a Jefferson error, and Vermillion scored on an RBI single by Wetzel.
After not scoring in the fourth inning, the Cougars added three more runs in the top of the fifth. Those runs came on an two-run double from Rummel and an RBI single by Munslow.
Jefferson, which totaled 11 hits, was led by Rummel with three hits and three RBI, Munslow with three hits and an RBI and Smith with three RBI on the home run. Munslow also picked up the pitching win, allowing two earned runs on four hits in a complete-game effort.
For the Cardinals (7-3), Wetzel led the way with two hits and two RBI.
