SPRING MILLS - The Spring Mills boys and Musselman girls track teams found themselves in a very familiar spot at the end of the Class AAA, Region II track championship on Thursday - atop the leaderboard.
Keeping with the trend this year, the Cardinals and Applemen bested their opponents in another local meet, both winning Region II titles in their respective competitions.
Host Spring Mills, with 161, won the boys team competition, finishing ahead of Jefferson (144.5), Hedgesville (109), Musselman (108.5), Washington (82) and Martinsburg (81).
The Cardinals racked up an impressive seven wins, including four relay events. In the 4x100-meter relay, the team of Kam Taylor, Alex Collins, Blake Sanders and Douglas Mayer won with a time of 43.13 seconds, just ahead of Musselman at 43.17. Also winning were the 4x200 relay team (Dustin Bradsher, Collins, Sanders and Mayer, 1 minute, 29.62 seconds), 4x400 relay team (John Park, Christian Park, Bradsher and Mayer, 3:24.76) and the 4x110 shuttle hurdle team of Russel Day, Jacob Long, Toby Warfield and Loakkhae Uth-Smith, which finished with a time of 59.29.
Mayer added a win in the 400 with a time of 49.38, while Isaiah Griffin picked up a win in the 3,200-meter run in a time of 9:52.88 and Uth-Smith a win in the high jump at 6 feet, 4 inches.
Second-place Jefferson dominated the sprints, with Tony Allen winning the 100 (10.86) and 200 (21.67), while also getting wins from Agustin Hall (800, 1:57.97) and Conner Myers (1,600, 4:35.03).
Hedgesville's Dominick Gagum put together an impressive meet, once again, as he won the 110 hurdles in a time of 15.18, inching past Jefferson's Aden Gestl, at 15.24, as well as the 300 hurdles, where he again held off Gestl as they recorded times of 40.53 and 40.71, respectively. He also added a win in the pole vault (13-06).
Other winners included the Eagles' 4x800 team (Emerson Mogollon, Malachie Price, Jack Burton and Reagan Hardin, 8:12.80); Washington's Isaah Beard (long jump, 23-09) and George Welti (shot put, 45-08.25); and Musselman's Ethan Amankrah (discus, 144-03).
On the girls side, Musselman continued its impressive runs of titles, racking up 162 points, ahead of Washington (141), Jefferson (113), Spring Mills (86), Martinsburg (84) and Hedgesville (80).
Sadie Yates helped the Applemen to a title with a win in the 3,200, finishing with a time of 11:45.39. She also had a second-place finish in the 1,600 and was part of the second-place 4x800 relay team. Musselman's second win came in the 4x102.5 shuttle hurdles, where the team of Caitlin Gray, Marissa Sturba, Harper Bosley and Aniyah Porter posted a winning time of 1:05.66.
Second-place Washington had three individual winners, including Ayla Kidd in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.22, Jurnee Vrobel in the high jump at 5 feet and Kaylee Robinson in the discus with a throw of 107-9.
Jefferson had an impressive five wins, beginning with Hannah Phillips in the 800 (2:15.77) and 1,600 (5:23.86). Adding wins for the Cougars were Samantha Ogden in the pole vault (10-6), along with the 4x400 relay team (Avery Root, Sylvia Trevathan, Imani Wood and Phillips, 4:02.93) and the 4x800 relay team (Trevathan, Mable Cotgreave, Faith Foglesong and Phillips, 10:07.13)
Hedgesville came away with four wins, including three by Jadyn Macher, who won the 100 (12.52), 400 (58.46) and long jump (18-09). Courtney Merzouk added a win in the 300 hurdles with a time of 49.31, beating out Musselman's Nevaeh Thompson, who had a time of 49.67.
Other winners included: Martinsburg's Eva Craigie (200, 25.03) and the Bulldogs' 4x100 relay team (Dejahnay Davis, Shymira Jones, Airys Hicks and Craigie, 49.63), as well as Spring Mills' 4x200 relay team (Angelika Graham, Dalija, Saniah Garrison and Grace Fling, 1:45.98) and Kaylie Hall in the shot put (37-00.25).
