SHEPHERDSTOWN — James A. and Evelyn Roe Butcher celebrate their 70th Wedding Anniversary. The former president of Shepherd University and his wife, both natives of Cedarville, Gilmer County, were married June 2, 1950 in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

A special family luncheon was prepared for them by daughter Dr. Janice Huckaby and daughter in law Mrs. Donna Butcher at Janice’s home in Shepherdstown.

The couple have a daughter, Janice whose children are Chase Huckaby and Victoria Degen. They also have a son, Mark, with wife Donna and his sons, Justin and Christopher. Christopher and his wife Julie recently added to the family with the first great grandchild, daughter Carlee Evelyn Butcher.

The former president and his wife have always been seen as a team by friends and family, and Dr. Butcher has said that whatever success he may have had was due largely to the support and efforts of his wife. Their remarkable life together is a joy and inspiration to their family.
