Shepherdstown – Pack Horse Ford Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) gave monetary awards to three Jefferson High School United States Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) cadets on Wednesday, April 30, at Jefferson High School.

Pack Horse Ford Chapter First Vice Regent Lois Kimble presented three cadets with DAR awards during the JROTC awards ceremony. Through community organizations, 26 awards were given to upper class cadets. Their service to the community was recognized including participation in blood drives, clean ups, and other events, with 3,500 hours of community service performed. Cadets raised more than $90,000 for the Jefferson County Shoe and Coat Fund and seniors helped raise $255,000 over the last five years.

The recipient of the DAR Good Citizen Pin, certificate and $250 was awarded to Cadet Claire Burkhardt, a senior in the program who served as a Squadron Commander this year, responsible for developing and molding nearly 90 first-year cadets.

The recipient of the Bronze JROTC Medal, certificate, and $250 was awarded to Cadet Breandan Mullins, a junior who now serves as the Kitty Hawk Honor Society Commander.

The Dorrene Gageby Hale Scholarship was awarded by the Pack Horse Ford Chapter to Cadet Bradley May. Cadet May plans to attend West Virginia University and major in business. He was selected for this scholarship based on his outstanding academic achievement and leadership within the Corps of Cadets.

The Pack Horse Ford Chapter, NSDAR has supported these young members of our community for many years as they take their first steps in service to our nation.

DAR members come from a variety of backgrounds and interests, but all share a common bond of having an ancestor who helped contribute to securing the independence of the United States of America. Daughters are vibrant, active women who are passionate about community service preserving history, educating children, as well as honoring and supporting those who serve our nation.

Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible to join.
