SHEPHERDSTOWN — Shepherd and Fairmont were once rivals in two different conferences.
Now, the teams see each other only in mid-week, non-conference games, where the keen alertness and charged nerves aren’t quite as evident. The Rams are in the PSAC and the Fighting Falcons are in the Mountain East.
On Tuesday, it was Shepherd that rallied twice in the final four innings to finally post a 10-7 win, as pitchers Cooper Bryan and Eli Lam closed out the Falcons.
Trailing 7-4 in the bottom of the fifth, Shepherd scored three times when a series of seldom-seen infield plays, a sacrifice fly from Trey Sine and an infield error got them even.
Bryan retired six of the seven batters he faced and in the Ram eighth, more good fortune visited the Shepherd side.
With the score tied at 7-all, Sine led off with a bunt single and quickly stole second. Bodie Pullen, who had a three-hit afternoon, sent a liner toward right center for a double, sending Sine sailing into third.
An errant outfield relay rolled toward the Fairmont dugout as Sine scored standing up to snap the tie.
Pullen was able to score on a wild pitch just in front of Ethan Jones’ solo home run, which boosted the Rams’ lead to three runs at 10-7.
Lam trooped in from the left field bullpen, faced just three men — all of whom he retired — and earned himself a save.
The Rams used six pitchers, two fewer than they employed in posting a shutout win over Fairmont when the teams played on a neutral field in Morgantown.
Fairmont tried four pitchers, as both teams knew of the importance of conference outings coming this weekend and didn’t use any of their potential starters.
On Friday afternoon, Shepherd has a Fairfax Field doubleheader scheduled against Shippensburg.
When that four-game series begins, Shippensburg will have a conference record of 9-11 and is in fourth place. Only four teams from each of the league’s two divisions will qualify for the PSAC’s league tournament.
Shepherd will carry an 8-12 league record into Friday’s twinbill. That puts the Rams in fifth place and one game behind the Red Raiders.
